Abstract
A pelagic marine ciliate (Uronema sp.) was cultured from an open ocean water sample taken aseptically from 385 m. Its characteristics in culture are described. Observations were made of it feeding upon bacteria. The rate of formation of the food vacuoles and the rate of lysis of their contents was much faster than that observed in other ciliates. It was observed to exhibit large cell volume changes during flask culture. These changes are described and discussed
