Regarding the opinion of Marcin.
Dear Colleagues,

the fathers always need candidates for mothers to get children (in our case marine biology). The candidates? The Vikings?

The problem of funding is not always crucial, although, being frequently raised. If we try to get the admiration of our results primary to funding is the innovation (invention). A good product even got with low funding is easy to sell (publish). Some years ago (less than a decade) there was rather common expectation of a fleeding research money. It was not a problem to listen a speech summerized "more money". I think that period is rather over. The next stage were EU FP's funds. It is clear now that there do not know what a justice is. Few get funding and majority is just envy and this is not fair. The joke of the Russian official is bitter, but (forget the nationality) something might be upon it. Perhaps those best already left NAS countries. Now they have good funding and no need to have good ideas?
I shall finish with my personal opinion which is not as critical as this of Marcin. I still see problems in the Baltic which give a chance to obtain good results followed by publications in renown journals. The "grey literature" is loosing its value as nobody pays for recycled paper any more, or it may be that I am wrong?
