Introduction to the e-conference
Dear all interested in the issue of marine biodiversity research and international collaboration in this field,

We have the pleasure to announce the opening of the fourth MARBENA e-conference entitled:
Newly Associated States and Marine Biodiversity Research - Are marine biodiversity problems different for NAS as compared to other EU countries?

The background assumption: Most of the NAS countries are situated at the seas of low diversity and deep environmental problems (Baltic and Black seas).  For a long time, those countries were devoided of democracy, and its people were not taking direct responsibility to or were not concerned with their environment.  All the decision making was centralized and was the responsibility of top politicians only. The value of the sea, as global environment and specific medium linked with free movement of people is not in the traditional ethos of NAS countries citizens. However, in order to properly judge the situation, input of knowledge from the countries of long democracy tradition bordering our common seas is ofvital importance here.

We propose to discuss the five topics, each one introduced by two moderators:

1. What is the Baltic contribution to the European marine biodiversity? What is the marine biodiversity knowledge in NAS countries?
Chaired by:
prof. Krzysztof Jazdzewski, University of Lodz, Poland
Dr. Evald Ojaveer, Estonian Marine Institute, University ofTartu

2. Change of Baltic biodiversity over various time and spatial scales - what are the controlling factors? Can we predict the dynamics? -
Chaired by:
prof.  Andrzej Witkowski , University of Szczecin, Poland
Dr. Jonne Kotta, Estonian Marine Institute, University ofTartu

3. Where is the "cutting edge science" in the Baltic marine biodiversity?
Chaired by:
dr Jolanta Koszteyn, Institute of Oceanology PAS, Poland
Prof. Erik Bonsdorff, Abo Akademi, Finland

4. Socioeconomic/cultural dimension and conservation status of marine
biodiversity in the Baltic Sea
Chaired by:
Dr Eugeniusz Andrulewicz, Sea Fisheries Institute, Poland
Dr Georg Martin, Estonian Marine Institute, University of Tartu

5. Is there a need for further human intervention the Baltic ecosystems?
Chaired by:
dr Krzysztof Skóra, Institute of Oceanography UG, Poland
Prof. Sergei Olenin, Coastal research and Planning Institute, University of Klaipeda

This e-conference will be organised prior to the BIOPLATFORM meeting in  Belovesha, Poland 5-9 of July to discuss:  "Biodiversity research strategy and structure in the NAS: preparing for FP 6". The results of our e-conference will be presented there. Every day one new topic will be introduced by two moderators. The discussion will be going on the new and previous themes each day, so we are starting from  one theme for discussion in the first day and in the last day we will  have all five themes open. We ask you for active participation in the discussion, the format of messages should consist of:  a) title of your contribution, b) name of the author c) text (long messages must be send to marbena@vliz.be)

We wish you a vivid and interesting discussion,

dr Henn Ojaveer, Estonian Marine Research Institute, Estonia
prof. Jan Marcin Weslawski, Institute of Oceanology, Poland
