Marine scientists
VLIZ acts as a point of contact in the field of marine sciences. This means that VLIZ permanently maps the marine scientific landscape – including the researchers and specialised staff – in Flanders and Belgium so as to actively promote the available expertise both in Belgium and abroad (VLIZ mission).
VLIZ aims to register and call attention to the marine researchers and specialised staff (technical and administrative employees) affiliated to the marine research groups of universities or scientific institutions in the best possible way. Within the scope of the Compendium for Coast and Sea, the research capacity of the marine research groups is listed in a systematic and replicable way.
The persons affiliated to the marine research groups are listed on the webpage of their respective group (see institutes). In addition, the integrated marine information system (IMIS) allows to search for a specific person affiliated to a marine research group.
VLIZ also provides an overview of important and remarkable historical marine scientists from Belgium from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century (see overview article), and also overviews the marine research during the First World War.
