International mandates

The Government of Flanders has made VLIZ responsible for a number of particular assignments to support international organisations. These capitalise on the international experience and reputation VLIZ has built up. They also provide the opportunity to embed important European initiatives in Flanders.

VLIZ has been commissioned to represent the Government of Flanders in the Belgian delegation at the Executive Council and the General Assembly of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO  in the capacity of scientific expert and in consultation with the Department of Economy, Science and Innovation (EWI). VLIZ is included in the steering committee of the Flanders UNESCO Trust Fund to support the scientific activities of the UNESCO Science Programme (FUST).

In addition, VLIZ has the particular assignment to provide accommodation and support to the UNESCO/IOC Project Office for IODE.

The European Marine Board (EMB) is a pan-European platform of marine scientific organisations aimed at developing common priorities and bridging the gap between science and policy.

VLIZ represents Flanders in the European Marine Board and has the particular assignment to accommodate and support the EMB secretariat.

The Joint Programming Initiative Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPI Oceans) is a coordinating and integrating platform, open to all European countries that invest in marine and maritime research.

The Government of Flanders has commissioned VLIZ to support the JPI Oceans secretariat, in particular by seconding a number of employees to the Brussels secretariat.

The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), aims to open up the wealth of marine observations and make them  optimally accessible so as to invest in sustainable growth and employment.

The Government of Flanders has commissioned VLIZ to accommodate and support the EMODnet secretariat. For this purpose, a central portal site for observation data from European monitoring series has been created.
