Abstract
The development of the jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas) fishery in Peru is described, and some results are presented such as variations in the distribution and concentration of the resource, and catches and fishing effort, in relation to oceanographic characteristics, over the period 1991-95. Annual catches fluctuated between 58,000 tons in 1991 and 165,000 tons in 1994, with a progressive increase with fishing effort, which reached 77 vessels and 2,080 operating days in July, 1995. The highest indices of relative abundance were registered between June and December of the years analyzed, with 1994 being the year of greatest abundance.
