The subsurface samples that were used to compile this dataset were collected at four different stations along the longitudinal estuarine axis in autumn 1997 (November 17th: sites A and C, and November 28th: sites B and D) and summer 1998 (June 10th: sites C and D, and June 12th: sites A and B). Oxygen, salinity, temperature and turbidity were measured in situ using WTW meters. Samples were stored overnight at ambient temperature (November) or were processed within 3 hours of sampling (June). Macro-aggregates in the samples were artificially recreated. After 3 hours of incubation, the flocs were allowed to settle for 5 minutes and were seperated from the supernatans by decantation. After this, analysis was performed on the replicate incubations. SPM, POC and chl a were determined and Bacterial density, ciliate density and nannoflagellate (HNAN) density were determined. Details on the sampling and analyses procedures are described in the related publications. This dataset was compiled and used in the framework of the research that was conducted by Koenraad Muylaert, described in his Phd thesis: "Muylaert, K. (1999). Distribution and dynamics of protist communities in a freshwater tidal estuary. PhD Thesis. Universiteit Gent (RUG): Gent, Belgium. 192 pp." More specifically this dataset was used to study the association of microorganisms with estuarine flocs.

De waterstalen die werden gebruikt om deze dataset samen te stellen werden verzameld op vier verschillende stations langsheen de longitudinale estuariene as tijdens de herfst van 1997 (17 November: sites A en C, and 28 November: sites B en D) en de zomer van 1998 (10 Juni: sites C en D, en 12 Juni: sites A en B). Zuurstof, saliniteit, temperatuur en turbiditeit werden in situ gemeten gebruik maken van WTW meters. Stalen werden voor een nacht gestockeerd bij omgevingstemperatuur (November) of werden verwerkt binnen 3 uur na de staalname (Juni). Macro-aggregaten in de stalen werden op artificiële wijze opnieuw aangemaakt. Na 3 uur incubatie liet men de vlokken zakken (5 min) en werden ze door decanteren gescheiden van het supernatans. Hierna werden analyses uitgevoerd op de replica’s. SPM, POC en chl a werden bepaald en bacteriële densiteit en densiteit van ciliaten en nannoflagellaten werden bepaald. Meer details in verband met de staalname- en analyseprocedures zijn beschreven in de verwante publicaties. Deze dataset werd samengesteld en gebruikt in het kader van het onderzoek dat werd uitgevoerd door Koenraad Muylaert, beschreven in zijn Phd thesis: "Muylaert, K. (1999).
