Description:
Seas At Risk's "Climate and the Oceans" conference will look at the marine impacts of climate change and the mitigation challenges for the fishing and shipping industries. It will take place in Brussels on 5th November 2008.

The potential impacts of climate change on the environment are serious and relatively well-known, but the specific impacts on the marine environment seem to have a lesser hold on the minds of the general public as well as of policy and decision makers.

Seas At Risk will use this conference to draw attention to the effects of climate change on the oceans and on marine ecosystems, as well as on some economic activities that depend on those ecosystems. From that departing point, the conference will serve the purpose of analysing possible contributions of two maritime economic sectors to decrease global CO2 emissions, while at the same time contributing to the decrease of current levels of pressure on marine and coastal ecosystems, in a truly integrated ecosystem-based approach to maritime activities. The panels will be hosted by reputed scientists, policy makers and specialists in the issues at hand.
