Abstract
This paper describes the main results of the physical scale model study on tidal flow dynamics close to the entrance of the port of Zeebrugge at the Belgian coast. After the successful model calibration with the existing field data, different scenarios were studied to minimize the crossflow in front of the port entrance. The first implemented scenario was excavating a deep sandpit close to the port. To reduce tidal flow velocities to the required levels of safety (< 2 knots) various breakwaters were constructed and investigated around the port. The obtained results and intercomparison between these various scenarios are presented and discussed in the present paper to find out the best possible solution to improve the port accessibility.
