Abstract
Fry af Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), are not capable af ingesting food until they have attained a total length of about 20mm. At this time the mouth gape is 1.1-1.3mm. Food particles less than 1 mm in diameter gave satisfactory growth, measured as population mean fish weight. No correlation between food particle size and mean growth rate was found for feeds composed of particles less than 1mm in diameter. However, small food particles, below 0.5mm in diameter, produced a more even growth, i.e. a smaller size range within the population, than did larger particles. Fry which hatched from small eggs grew poorly irrespective of food particle size.
