History marine research

Belgium has a long standing tradition in marine sciences. This history dates back to some early pioneers in the 16th century, but it wasn't until the 19th century that marine studies eventually became a fixed component of the Belgian scientific life. The country soon boasted a respected team of marine and coastal researchers, while the research infrastructure gradually expanded as well.
