Taxonomy Most taxonomist authors follow Hessle (1917:182) in treating Amphitrite johnstoni Malmgren as a synonym of Neoamphitrite figulus. Hessle introduced Neoamphitrite as a new genus. However, Fauvel (1927:248), who regarded Neoamphitrite Hessle as a synonym of Amphitrite, appeared to regard the 'figulus' of later authors as not Dalyell's species and thus kept A. johnstoni valid. There are relatively modern usages such as Dauvin (1978), and the name appears as valid in USA Atlantic coast checklists (eg Trott, 2004). These occurrences could be considered unverified at best. [details]
