Abstract
The colour of Crustacea living in coastal or shallow waters depends upon carotenoid pigments, astaxanthin in particular, often forming carotenolipoprotein complexes. Contrary to other natural pigmentary substances occurring in invertebrates, carotenoids are not synthesized de novo, and must be obtained with the diet. So, the aphotic conditions excluding photosynthetic production, it was therefore interesting to investigate the origin of these pigments in crustaceans from the deep-sea zone.
