Abstract
The concentrations of cadmium, lead and copper are higher in invertebrates than in fishes. For these metals, no biomagnification in food chains is observed. The concentration of zinc is of the same order of magnitude whatever the trophic level or the position of the organisms in the zoological classifying may be. Copper and zinc, indispensable for life and regulated trace elements, present similar concentrations in organisms of the same species wherever they were sampled in the Loire estuary or in the Bay of Bourgneuf. The concentrations of lead--an element which has no known physiological function--are higher in estuarine than in marine organisms. For cadmium, a similar pattern is observed but significant differences are not recorded for all the species common to these two natural environments.
