Abstract
In NW-Belgium the Eo-Oligocene deposits form aquifers which provide a substantial part of the water supply in this region. These layers crop out in Flanders and dip to the north where they are covered by clay layers which make them semi-confined. In the NW-part of Belgium they contain fresh water, but salinity increases to the north. Depending on the distribution of the salt water they can also be interesting as water-supply units in the SW-part of the Netherlands Model simulations have shown that the actual distribution of fresh and salt water in the aquifers is mainly the result of different flow conditions during the last glacial periods, and not only of the present groundwater-flow situation.
