Abstract
A methodology for modelling coastal flooding upon extreme storm events is created as a coupling of a process-based morphodynamic model - XBeach - and a raster-based flooding model- LISFLOOD-FP. Simulations are performed for the severe storm of November 2001 at Marquesa beach in the Ebro delta, Spain. Morphodynamic calculations are executed for lD beach profiles with the XBeach model. Their spacing has to be determined as a function of the spatial variability of beach and dune topography. Due to a lack of pre- and post-storm beach profiles, the parameter set-up is determined based on a sensitivity analysis and a literature review. The inclusion of morphodynamic beach response turns out to be indispensable when simulating coastal floodings during storm impacts in sedimentary coasts. The influence of this feedback is higher for beach segments that are more susceptible for erosion, i.e. low-lying dunes that are totally overwashed. This results in two highly sensitive zones at Marquesa beach. In this study area, a high-resolution DEM is demanded in order to model hinterland flooding accurately, making the inertial formulation of the floodplain flow equations increasingly applicable to reduce calculation times. Restoration of sediment supply in the Ebro river, allowing the beach to retreat and eventually a structural protection of the sensitive zones are urgent actions to be done in order to protect the delta for destructive events under, RSLR.
