Abstract
    Aquaculture is clearly at a crossroads and can come, in fact should come, of age in the 21st century. However, this will require more responsible researchers and more integrated R&D approaches than we apply at present. Although food aquaculture still represents the dominant output, this type of aquaculture has evolved along minimal research inputs. Trial and error practices, developed over several decades, even centuries, have resulted in well-balanced extensive production systems. Continuous expansion of production area and further improvements in culture systems have been responsible for the fast growth over the last decades. Many agree, however, that productions cannot increase at the same pace simply because of limitations of suitable water resources. Furthermore, the recent interest to "modernize," which, in fact, means to intensify freshwater fish production will imply very serious threats to sustainability.
