Abstract
During the last 10 years, some projects have been performed at the BAW to investigate ship-waterway interactions of single large containerships and also of head-on passing ships in confined fairways using hydraulic models as well as field studies. The results of the model and field investigations on dynamic response of large containerships and the yawmoment and sway-forces close to banks is a valuable input towards improved fairway design, especially when used as basic input to enhance manoeuvring models in ship handling simulation, which is one major tool for testing the trafficability of existing and planned approach channels for very large vessels.
