Abstract
    A ship squat modelling system has been developed which couples a hydrodynamic model and a structural model. The hydrodynamics are calculated with a stationary potential flow model. The structural model integrates the pressure over the hull, and deduces the vertical displacement of the vessel and rotations around two axes (rolling and pitching angles) if needed. The 3D mesh is updated after the hull is displaced by the structural model. The system iterates until the displacement difference of the hull is negligible. The influence of the proximity of banks on the squat can be evaluated by the modelling system as these banks are taken into account in the hydrodynamic model.

    In parallel, Flanders Hydraulics Research (FHR) has executed comprehensive series of systematic tests on bank effects in their towing tank for manoeuvres in shallow water. These experimental data are compared to the results of the numerical calculation for a container vessel sailing at two different lateral positions in a channel.
