Abstract
The mathematical model of the dispersion of contaminant in oceans and seas consists in an advection-diffusion type equation, where the inertial term dominates the diffusion. As the problem is highly non-linear, standard methods fail because of dissipation and dispersion errors. New algorithms in the finite difference and finite element world claim improvements in that respect and are compared to a Hermetian (fourth-order compact) difference scheme. The finite difference schemes remain the best choice from many computational criteria and among them, the compact method provides better accuracy.
