Abstract
Sublittoral meiobenthos of 4 stations was monitored in 1992 in and around a dumping site for TiO2-acid waste off the Dutch Coast. The meiofauna was examined quantitatively and qualitatively. In order to evaluate the impact of ceased dumping activities, several parameters describing the meiofauna and the nematode community were investigated. Special attention was focused on comparing the change between 1992 and 1984-1989 and the difference between dumping and reference area. The sediment of the 4 stations characterised as a clean well sorted medium sand and is comparable to the former period. The meiofauna community is represented by 10 taxa, and is dominated by Nematodes, Copepods, Gastrotrichs and Turbelarians. The density of the total community was 1885 ind./10cm² in the dumping station 4 and 6, 1274 ind./10cm² in the reference stations 21 and 22. The N/C-ratio was statistically significantly lower in 1992 than in 1985, but in that last year it had an exceptional high value. No significant difference was noted between 1992 and the whole period 84-89. The nematode community of the 4 station consists of 208 species, belonging to 107 genera and 39 families in the dumping stations and the reference stations, 94 species and 195 species respectively were identified. The dominant species was Karkinochromadora lorenzeni followed by Dichromadora cucullata, Neochromadora munita and Monoposthia mirabilis. Diversity, feeding type, age structure, sex composition, and biomass of the nematodes were investigated. In 1992 the nematode community in the reference area was significantly more diverse than in the dumping area. The percentage of epistratum feeders was significantly higher in 1992 compared to 1986. The nematode community is characterised by nearly half of the population being juveniles. The number of female and male is more and less the same and nearly half of the females were gravid. For the mean individual biomass of a nematode, 0, 17 µg dwt. in 1992 was lower than 0, 37 µg dwt. in 1986 and 0, 46 µg dwt. in 1987. Application of multivariate techniques on the densities of the nematode species composition indicated a difference between samples of 1992 and the former period.
