Abstract
The results of this project of the Ministry of the Flemish Community, Science, Innovation and Media Department, will consist of the following items:
1. general overview and critical analysis of the international legal framework concerning marine pollution by ships;
2. general overview of the Belgian and South-African legislation in this area, comparison of these legislations;
3. critical analysis of the national legislations and their accordance with the international legal framework;
4. regional European and African initiatives and their impact on the issue;
5. proposals for further improvement and new initiatives in the field of these national legislations and possible regional approaches;
6. suggestions for a better application and compliance with the national, regional and international rules concerning marine pollution by ships.
