Abstract:
De afdeling Geologie is actief in verschillende onderzoeksthema's:
  • archeometrie: gebruik van minerale grondstoffen in de Oudheid en de organisatie en technologie van de antieke ambachtelijke productie;
  • ertsgeologie en geofluïda: studie van (1) sediment-gehoste afzettingen, zoals stratiforme Cu-Co afzettingen in de Centraal-Afrikaanse Copperbelt en lagen-gebonden Zn-Pb afzettingen wereldwijd, (2) REE-Zr-Nb-Ta-P mineralisatie geassocieerd met carbonatieten en alkalische stollingsgesteenten in Afrika (Burundi, DRC, Rwanda, Angola) en (3) Ta-Nb-Sn-Li pegmatiet- en Sn-W-Au-kwartsaderafzettingen in Centraal-Afrika (Burundi, DRC en Rwanda), Europa (Portugal) en de VS (Maine en South Dakota);
  • geodynamica: geodynamische processen in laaggradig metamorfe, weinig doorlatende, middenkorst-omgevingen (i.e. leisteengordels);
  • biogeologie en paleoklimatologie: verbanden tussen milieu en biotische veranderingen gedurende de laatste 70 miljoen jaar van de geschiedenis van de aarde;
  • reservoirgeologie: analyse en modellering op het gebied van sedimentkarakterisering (herkomst, ontstaan, transport en diagenese) en reservoirkarakterisering (reservoirarchitectuur en vloeistofstroming);
  • toegepaste mineralogie: minerale karakterisering en gebruik van industriële mineralen met röntgenpoeder-diffractie als belangrijkste analysetechniek;
  • petrologie: multidisciplinaire onderzoeksgroep die zich bezighoudt met differentiatieprocessen in actieve vulkanen en aardse planeten.


In het kader van het mariene onderzoek heeft de groep expertise in mariene microfossielen en mariene carbonaten.
