Abstract:
In 1904 werd aan de Universiteit Gent de onderzoekseenheid Scheepsbouwkunde opgericht, die als de voorloper van de huidige afdeling Maritieme Techniek kan worden beschouwd. Deze afdeling was initieel gekend onder de naam ‘laboratorium voor Scheepsbouwkunde’, en later als ‘dienst voor Scheepsbouwkunde’.

De missie van de afdeling Maritieme Techniek is drieledig en heeft in eerste instantie als doel onderwijs op academisch niveau te verstrekken op het gebied van het ontwerp, de constructie, de aandrijving, het functioneren en het in het bedrijf houden van maritieme systemen zoals schepen, maar ook offshore constructies. Een tweede aspect heeft betrekking op het uitvoeren van zowel fundamenteel als toegepast maritiem wetenschappelijk onderzoek, vooral met betrekking tot de hydrodynamiek van schepen en andere drijvende structuren (zoals golfenergieconvectoren). Het derde missiepunt richt zich op de wetenschappelijke dienstverlening ten behoeve van en in samenwerking met bedrijven en openbare diensten in de maritieme sector.

Het onderzoek van de afdeling Maritieme Techniek concentreert zich vooral op de maritieme hydrodynamica. Dit is het gedrag van schepen en andere drijvende constructies in het water. Terwijl de nadruk ligt op het gedrag van schepen in ondiep en beperkte waterlopen (toegangskanalen, rivieren, kanaleren, havens), energie extractie uit golven d.m.v. drijvende structuren, het effect van fouling en wrijving op scheepsprestaties wordt recent ook de dynamiek van aquacultuurplanten onderzocht.

Het onderzoek op bovenvermelde thema’s omvat aspecten als modelonderzoek, manoeuvreergedrag van schepen in ondiep water (met een focus op manoeuvreersimulatie), invloed van sliblagen op scheepsgedrag (nautische bodem), interactie van schepen met oevers en andere schepen, gedrag van afgemeerde schepen, op- en afvaartregeling voor diepstekende schepen, probabilistisch toelatingsbeleid, verticale scheepsbewegingen onder invloed van squat en golven, in- en uitvaren van sluizen, binnenvaart en estuaire vaart (risicoanalyses), vaargeulontwerp en equivalente bodem. In het kader van het Kenniscentrum Varen in Ondiep en Beperkt Water, opgericht in 2008, wordt er structureel samengewerkt met het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium. Met datzelfde laboratorium is er een samenwerking voor de sleeptank voor manoeuvres in ondiep en beperkt vaarwater en wordt er wetenschappelijke bijstand geleverd bij het sluismodel en scheepsmanoeuvreersimulatoren.
