VLIZ Members' Day 2020: preliminary program

The corona crisis makes 2020 an exceptional year. We follow closely the measures in force against the spread of the Covid-19 virus. As a result, we cannot yet determine the date of the members' day. We will inform you as soon as public events are allowed to take place again.

We already like to give you a glimpse of the preliminary program:
The VLIZ members' day will start at the InnovOcean site, the office spaces of the VLIZ (Wandelaarkaai). After a welcome from our director Jan Mees, scientists will explain the research they perform thanks to the Brilliant Marine Research Idea grants (funded by member contributions and donations). Then we walk to the Marine Station Ostend (Slipwaykaai) where the expansion works are discussed. We conclude with a reception.

Are you interested in participating in the VLIZ members' day? You can already pre-register. We will inform you about the date and the program in due time.

Earlier editions

VLIZ Members' Day 2019

On Friday 21 June 2019, VLIZ organized a unique event for its members in the Marine Station Ostend. The focus of this edition was on the Marine Robotics Centre and the recent developments at VLIZ. During five information sessions VLIZ collaegues talked about the expansion of VLIZ, the underwater robot Genesis, the brand-new autonomous underwater robot Barabas, the very special watercraft Adhemar and the newest educative tools on underwater robots.

  • A seabed full of electricity thanks to cable bacteria
  • The development of a test platform for antifouling paints

VLIZ Members' Day 2017

With the title 'Shellfish Inside Out' VLIZ welcomed its members at the Marine Station Ostend. This second edition was centered around shellfish. Marine professionals, VLIZ staff and SeaWatchers, unravelled all the secrets of the shells on our North Sea beaches. Participants could choose two workshops from a wide range of activities:

  • Seek shells on the beach under the guidance of SeaWatchers
  • Learn how to identify shells with the help of marine professionals
  • Design beach flowers with the explanation of shells as payment
  • VLIZ employees show you their work on shellfish
  • How sustainable is the consumption of shellfish?
  • Cooking with shellfish

VLIZ Members’ Day 2016

All members were welcomed at the renewed Marine Station Ostend (MSO) at the Slipwaykaai near the site Halve Maan for a cosy and informative midsummer activity. At 19:00 the guided tours started along the Eastern Bank, an area where nature, heritage, fisheries and other maritime activities, together with residential estate are looking for a common modus vivendi. The area also harbours an interesting history of Flanders’ marine science.  Expert guides (Dutch speaking) shed more light on all these aspects, including the secrets of the military heritage (Fort Napoleon and bunkers of both World wars) present in the coastal dunes. Finally, a demo of the beach observation network 'SeaWatch-B' took place, one of the philanthropy projects set up by VLIZ through the financial support of members fees and donations. We closed off with a reception at the Marine Station Ostend.
