Abstract
In a number of bottom samples collected in the southern North Sea and in the larger rivers flowing into it (Thames, Rhine, Meuse, Ems, Weser, Elbe) have been determined: a) the concentration of trace metals with emission spectrography and neutron activation analysis, b) grainsize, c) calcium carbonate content, d) the percentage of heavy minerals, and e) grain characteristics such as roundness, lustre etc. Although statistically not enough samples have been analyzed (this study was only a general orientation), the trace element concentration, either in relation to the amounts of heavy minerals or not, offers possibilities for distinguishing mud (silt) of different origin. It is therefore very likely that feldspar analysis and correlation of sediment characteristics of a large number of samples will give useful results.
