Abstract
This report contains the result of the deliberations of the Sub-Panel on Carbon Dioxide of the Joint Panel on Oceanographic Tables and Standards.Recommendations are presented for pH scales in seawater. Particular emphasis is given to a new set of standards that can be used in seawater or seawater-like solutions.Best fit equations are suggested for the first and second dissociation constants of carbonic acid and the dissociation constant of boric acid as functions of temperature, salinity, and pressure. In addition recommendations are presented for the solubility products of calcite and aragonite in seawater as functions of temperature, salinity, and pressure.Recommendations are presented with respect to future work that will lead to the refinement of the thermodynamic data base on the carbonic acid system in seawater.
