Abstract
The project is an integrated approach of directed toxicological studies and exposure assessments to characterise the emerging human and wildlife health risks from brominates flame retardants (Bars) by endocrine disruption. The project consists of seven themes:
1) Selection of the BFR congeners by in vitro (receptor) assays covering a wide spectrum of endocrine effects;
2) Human hazard identification by studies in rats, including assessment of reproductive and immune function;
3) Aquatic wildlife hazard identification in zebra fish and flounder;
4) Human exposure assessment by measurement of actual levels and time trends in breast milk and human diets in Europe;
5) Aquatic ecosystem exposure assessment by measurement of levels in the aquatic food chain including top predators in polluted and reference sites in Europe;
6) Integrated risk assessment for humans and aquatic wildlife based on data from themes 1-5; and
7) Communication to policymakers, public and industry as basis for preventive action.
