Abstract
Objectives
1. Understanding and quantification of the goods and services provided by marine biodiversity in case study areas.
2. Socio-economic valuation of those goods and services and ‘biological valuation’ within these case study areas.
3. Review of management and legislation affecting marine ecosystems.
4. Hence development of future management strategies and decision support systems to provide costeffective strategies for effective management of marine ecosystems.

Description of work
Task 1. socio-economic valuation of marine biodiversity in several case-study areas
Task 2a.provision of ecological data to link and quantify marine biodiversity and the provision of goods and services within these study areas
Task 2b.develop a ‘biological valuation’ scheme to synthesise a unified index of biological importance of marine habitats so that habitats can be GIS mapped with an indication of their ecological importance.
Task 3. review existing indicators, current legislation and conventions and policy drivers and the application of environmental indicators within previous and current management of marine ecosystems
Task 4. develop decision support systems for the management of marine ecosystems
